Open Minds, Open Cities: Building Better Traffic Systems Together

Open Controller is an open source software package attempting to implement a fully functional traffic light controller.

The Open Controller

Welcome to the home page of Open Controller community. We aim to improve the development of better solutions for traffic management, smart cities and all other stakeholders interested in better solutions for our cities and other traffic environments.

For this purpose we are developing and open source alternative for tarffic controller sofware, sensor integration and sophisticated traffic analysis. The initial goal of the project is to produce a traffic light controller sofware capable of producing signal timings similar to any proprietary vehicle actuated traffic light controller.

Mission statement

Over the past half-century, innovations in computing, sensor technology, and the internet have transformed nearly every industry—from retail to manufacturing. Yet, traffic control and management systems have seen comparatively little change. It may surprise some, but even today’s ‘advanced’ traffic light controllers could be replicated using basic electronic components without any real loss of functionality.

This stagnation is not due to a lack of research, technological limitations, or the need for improvement. Instead, it arises from the closed nature of current systems and high barriers to entry, which stifle new and experimental solutions.

The Open Controller project was initiated by a group of researchers, industry veterans, and developers frustrated by the slow pace of progress in traffic management and smart city solutions. We believe that the primary cause of this stagnation lies in the closed, proprietary systems that prevent new entrants and innovative approaches in traffic management. That’s why we launched the Open Controller initiative, and we invite everyone to join us in developing and enhancing open-source solutions for smarter cities and a better future
